Problem: How does the ration of females to males effect the population of fruit flies in controlled enviroment for 3 weeks.
Hypothesis: If I was to put 4 females and 2 males ( a ration of 2:1 ) in a vial then I expect to see 646 adults at the end of 3 weeks because each female will lay 20 eggs a day so 80 eggs will be layed in one day. By day 14 those 80 eggs will become adults then everyday after day 14 til day 21 80 adults will be born. After day 21 we would of had 646 adults because we have to add the 6 from the start.
Background Research: Fruit flies are insects that reproduce fast because every 14 days a egg goes to an adult. The fruit fly has 3 stages then it becomes a full adult. It goes from a egg to larva in 8 days then in 6 more days it goes to a pupa. After being a Pupa for 6 days the fruit fly becomes a adult. The Female fruit fly can lay upto 20 eggs a day. U could tell the difference from a male and a female by looking at the back of them the male have dark backs and the female back is lighter. The average fruit fly can live 6-8 weeks.
Procedure:
Step 1: We are putting 2 males and 4 females ( a ration of 2:1 ) in 3 vials with food.
Step 2: Put vials in a bin in room temperture for 3 weeks.
Step 3: Make observations of eggs , larva and pupa and see what has changed in the habitat.
Step 4: On Day 21 we are going to put the flies to sleep and we are going to count the new number of Fruit flies.
Analysis: I looked at 3 vials that each had a ratio of 2 females to 1 male. Each vial had a different amount of fruit flies. Vial Kaila had 210 flies , SJRS had 114 and OAJNQ had 268. If I was to put 4 females and 2 males a ( ration of 2:1 ) fruit flies in a jar then I expect to see 646 adults at the end of 3 weeks. Each female will lay 20 eggs a day so 80 eggs will be layed each day. By day 14 those 80 eggs will become adults. So after day 21 I will be seeing 646 eggs because I have to add the 6 from the start. My data did not support my hypothesis because in my hypothesis I was suppose to have 646 adults at the end of 3 weeks. In none of my vials I had a number close to 646 the highest I got was 268. My data does not support my hypothesis because each female can lay upto 20 eggs a day but that doesn't mean its going to lay 20 a day it may lay less than 20 a day.
Conclusion: In my experiment I tried to find out how many adult fruit flies will I have if I put a ratio of 2:1 in a vial and leave them there for 3 weeks. I set up 3 vials with 4 females and 2 males and as the days past they reproduced. In my experiment I put 4 females in 3 vials to see if I could match my hypothesis and get 646 adults. I was nowhere near my hypothesis one vial had 210 adults , another 114 and my last one 268. My data did not support my hypothesis because my hypothesis was to get 646 adults and I was no where close. Some errors we had was the food because we lost a few flies that were burried in the food. Another error was the topper because some flies got stuck there and died. If I did this experiment again I would put the vials in a different temperture and give it more light to see how that effects it. I'd like to investigate what would happen if they were in a bigger space instead of the small vial.
This is a graph that represents the data of the outcome of my experiment.

This Week in Science (Fruit Fly DYO Part 1)
This week in science we made a DYO about our actual fruit fly problem. We have our flies in a vial there are 4 females and 2 females. We also observed our vials to see how the fruit fly process is going. We finally came up with the hypothesis for our fruit fly problem and we are expecting to have 646 adults by the end of 3 weeks. Thats all we did this week in science class.
This week in science we learned how to make a better DYO then the first one we made because for this one we gathered alot more information and it was more to do. I also learned something that i didnt know i thought fruit flies were adults in 16 days but by day 14 thier adults only that they cant have babies til day 16. I also learned how to make a better hypothesis using if then and because. I also learned how the average fruit fly only lives for about a month. Thats all i learned this week in science.
This Picture shoes a science investigation.

This week in science ( Fruit Flies Part 2 )
This week in science we finally put in our spider in our habitat. When we first put the spider in the tank it was climbing up like if it was trying to escape but then it got used to its surroundings. We also took out some fruit flies from the jar they came in and we put them into another one to start the expirement. We solved the problem of how many eggs and adults will be born with 3 fruit flies in 3 weeks. After we solved the problem we made a poster and graphed our results.
This week in science we learned how fruit flies reproduce and how long it takes for them to develop. I learned that every 16 days a fruit fly becomes a full adult where it can have babies. I also learned that a fruit fly may lay up to 20 eggs a day. The fruit fly process has four stages. First comes the egg, the comes the larva after the larva comes the pupa then finally u get the adult fruit fly.
If i was to put 1 female amd 2 males fruit flies in a jar I expect to see to see 163 adults at the end of 3 weeks. Each female will lay 20 eggs a day. By day 14 those 20 eggs will become adults. Then everyday after day 14 20 adults will be born. So after day 21 we would have 420 eggs and 163 adults because we had to add the 3 from the start.
This picture shows the fruit fly problem where you have 1 female and 2 males.

This week in Science (No Impact Man
No impact man is a New Yorker who was starting a project to do things without causing impact to the environment. He and his family couldn't hurt the environment for a year. His project required him to not use plastic , paper , outside foods and most other food and he had to recycle and reuse everything. The only food he and his family could eat are foods that are naturally grown and he had to know how the food was harvested. After five months he couldn't even use electricity he had to get his light by natures daylight. They also could throw out any trash outside so he had a bucket of worms decomposing the garbage. The project didn't seem so hard for him but his wife was really struggling to complete it but they both put a lot of effort into it and they didn't impact the environment for a year.
Impact man's behavior helps him lower is negative impact on the enviously because he wasn't hurting the environment at all. He was using things that were naturally grown into the environment or he wasn't using things that hurt it he was all natural. Impact man was trying to stop everything to hurt the environment because people were destroying the environment by producing so much garbage and using things processed. Impact man also behaved very well during his mission because never did he give one complain that he needed something that he couldn't use he was also trying to help his wife because she was really struggling but never did he give up.
When I was watching this film I couldn't believe how he and his family was doing it because its so hard to quit all the good things for a year. I saw they gave up mostly all the foods and I thought to myself how can they do it because I know I can't I love eating outside foods and other things. I also thought it was crazy they took off their electricity because that means they had no refrigerator , no tv , no computer I don't know how they lived like that for a year because I know I'll go crazy if I had no tv for a year and all those other things. I think its a great accomplishment because us as americans hurt the environment daily and for him to not hurt it for a year its a big thing I'll be very proud if that was me.

This Week in Science (Fruit Flies Day 1)
This week in science we observed our spider habitat to see any changes we saw. A lot changed in our habitat like our plants grew , we had a few fruit flies in our tank and some of our insects died. After observing our fantasy habitat we looked at fruit flies in a jar and we saw how they eat and their babies. We also started answering the question about how many babies a 3 fruit flies if we leave them in a jar for 3 weeks. That's all we did so far in this week of science.
This week in science we learned a lot about fruit flies. I learned that fruit flies could lay up to 20 eggs a day and after that they develop quickly. I also learned the fruit fly life cycle, it goes from the egg to the larva then to that pupa and after the pupa a fruit fly is fully developed. The process from a egg to a full grown fruit fly takes 16 days. Fruit flies are small insects but they reproduce very quickly.
This is a picture of a full grown male fruit fly.

This Week in Science (Ecosystems)
This week in science was a very productive week for us because we did alot of activities. First we designed our spider habitat on a poster paper. Then after designing it on paper we had to design our real tank so we to went to the community garden to get things for our tank. In the community garden we met the gardener Bob and we picked under rocks for insects, worms, slugs and many other weird creatures. After we finished up in the garden we went to a fish store and saw a lot different fish then David bought us hot chocolate and we went back to school.
This week in science we learned alot about spider habitats. We learned how to set up the habitat for our spiders and we also learned were to find insects and worms to put in our tank. We also learned what moss is and how it grows when u put it on rocks. We also learned about the carbon-oxygen cycle and how the insects breathe out carbon and breathe in oxygen. The oxygen they breathe in comes from plants or from the moss.We also learned about our organisms and how they survive.
I want to know where does moss come from because its like a grass but its not really grass, it looks real cool. I also want to know what are slugs because there just like a big blob that moves around and there also rare to find. Im also curious about why did we put a plastic over the tank and when are the spiders going to live there. Thats all im really curious about.

Fantasy Habitat
This week in science I chose an animal and created a fantasy for it. the animal i chose was a lion because lions are my favorite animal and thier the king of the jungle. After i gathered all the information for my lion i created a mini poster with the lion and all the things in its biome. I drew a lion and everything else in the habitat they live in. After finishing my drawing i colored it and i made this post.
This week in science i learned all about lion and the habitat it lives in. The lion lives in the savanah where theres dry land and many other animals live in like wildebeest. I also leanred about the biotic features which means the living things in the biome. I also learned about abiotic features which are the non living things in the biome. This week was a very productive week because i learned all about lions and thier habitat and i illustrated a picture for it myself.

This week in Science: Energy Transfer
In science this week i created a fantasy habitat of a lion. After i finished with the fantasy habitat i created a the food chain of the lion. Next to the food chain of the lion we created an energy pyramid to represent the percentage of energy each thing had. This week in science was very focused on our fantasy animal that we chose and we studied everything about that animal. This week was a very cool week and we learned alot about an animal we chose.
This week in science we did a lot and we learned a lot about the animal we chose. I learned about producer, consumers, biotic features and abiotic features. We also learned how food chains work like what eats what are the producers, consumers and other roles in a food chain. We also learned how to make a energy chains and how to put the animals in order from the energy they produce. This week in science was very focused on our fantasy habitat and energy pyramids and energy chains.

This week in Science (Spider habitat design)
This week in science we designed our habitat for our spiders. We had to come up with ideas about what to put inside our cage for the spider to survive. We made a poster with everything we came up with to put inside the cage for the spider, we put in insects, water, vines and many other things. We also played a nice game where we travled around diferent reservoirs and we saw how they each changed as we traveled and what they had in them. This week was a very productive week and we accomplished alot of things.
This week in science we did and learned alot. We learned what spiders need to survive and we learned how to set up a good habitat for a spider. We also learned alot about reservoirs in a game we played where we had to travel around looking how things transfer and how things live in the reservoirs. We also learned how things moved from one reservoir to another and what type of things lived in them.

This Week In Science

This picture shows the frog with its mouth open and u can see its tongue. i chose this picture because it looks cool and so people could see how frogs look with their mouth open. |
This picture shows the frog when it was first cut and it had all its organs still in it. I chose this picture because it was one of the first steps and it shows the frog on its first cut.
This picture shows the frog opened up with some organs taken out. I chose this picture because it shows the frog with some organs taken out and it looks different then when it was first opened.
This picture shows me and my group working together as a team to take out the frog organs. I chose this picture because it shows all of us into our work and focusing \.
This week in science we disected frogs in groups and everyone had a different job. the jobs were the surgeon , the assistant, the navigator and the frogtographer. the first day of disection we opened up the frog and observed it. the second day we took out all the organs of the frog and put it on paper with thier names. Thats how it went this week in science class.
this week in science we learned how to disect frogs. we also learned all about frog body parts and how frogs and humans have almost all the same organs.
First Impressions
I like frogs i think there cool animals because they have a great ability to jump. I think there cool also because they could live on land and in water. Im excited about disecting frogs because i always wanted to disect an animal even though its nasty. i never really blogged in my life so im happy to try something new and lets see how this goes.
